Born Free is looking for one or two bright new talents to join our amazing team of Youth and Junior Ambassadors. If you are, or know, a young person between the ages of 8 and 18, who would be interested to join the team, we would love to hear from you.

Our Youth (aged 13 – 21) and Junior (aged up to 8 – 13) Ambassador programme offers opportunities for young people to engage with our work, whilst learning about wildlife and gaining skills to support future careers – whether these are in conservation, animal welfare or as wildlife champions working within other industries.

Who can be a Youth or Junior Ambassador?

Anyone can become a Youth or Junior Ambassador. A high profile or ‘celebrity’ status is not required, but we do ask that our Ambassadors have:

  • A passion for wildlife
  • Done something standout for wildlife
  • A proven commitment to making a difference, such as:
    • Taking action to help wildlife
    • Fundraising for wildlife
    • Supporting conservation work in a local natural habitat
    • Educating others about wildlife
    • Spreading the word
    • Challenging policies and laws that impact wildlife and habitats.
  • The ability to champion wildlife amongst your community.

It is also important that the nominee’s parent(s)/guardian(s) are able and willing to commit to supporting communications with Born Free and engagement with Born Free activities, including, on occasion, attending in-person events. This is especially important for Junior Ambassadors.

What do Born Free’s Youth and Junior Ambassadors do?

Over the last few years, one or more of our amazing Youth and Junior Ambassadors have:

  • Provided quotes, taken part in interviews and written articles that have featured in Born Free magazines, blogs and emails.
  • Raised thousands of pounds for Born Free by taking part in fundraising challenges including the Great North Run and Born Free’s Walk on the Wildside.
  • Attended marches and demonstrations, including a number that focused on the keeping of Gentoo penguins at Sea Life in London.
  • Attended multiple parliamentary events in Westminster, focusing on the protection of hares in the UK and banning trophy hunting imports.
  • Engaged with local MPs around laws to protect wildlife and improve the lives of animals in captivity.
  • Engaged with international policy, including contributing to the consultation on South Africa’s proposed export quotas for elephant, black rhinoceros, and leopard hunting trophies.
  • Delivered workshops about tigers to schools as part of an environmental art project run in partnership with Drawing for the Planet.
  • Taken part in multiple online webinars, including an international celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES).
  • And most recently, attended and spoken at the Children’s Parliament event at Leicester University, celebrating Sir David Attenburough’s 100th birthday

All this, whilst continuing to be a voice, both for wild animals and the young people across the country (and world) who are passionate about keeping wildlife in the wild, where it belongs.

I can honestly say being a Youth Ambassador for Born Free has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. For instance, as ambassador for the Tiger’s Forest Workshop series, I’ve visited underprivileged schools across India, Singapore and Malaysia with my family, and remotely in the UK and US, teaching children to steward tiger habitats through a special blend of conservation principles and Biro art.

Born Free directly gives us ambassadors a voice through their publications and incredible network, both of which contribute to a global conservation lifeline: a lifeline which ambassadors get to be part of.

After nominations have been received, a review process will take place, and a short list of nominees will be invited to informal online ‘get to know you’ chats (where possible these will also be attended by a current Youth or Junior Ambassador).

Final selections will be made by mid-August 2026 at the latest.

We will aim to respond to everyone who applies, so if you haven’t heard from us by the 24th July please do get in touch via [email protected].

More information:

We work closely with each Youth or Junior Ambassador to understand their particular interests and passions. We will make every effort to ensure suitable opportunities to engage with these areas are available. However, some areas of our work may have more opportunities to engage with than others.

Nominees (and their parent(s) and/or guardian(s)) must be able to commit to at least 12 months of engagement with the programme.

Priority will be given to UK-based nominations, as we are able to facilitate more meaningful, in-person opportunities to engage, however international nominations are of course welcome.

Everything Born Free does will be in line with our Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults and Data Protection Policies, copies of which can be found here: bornfree.org.uk/policies.
