Visitor killed by tiger at chinese safari park

Concerning reports indicate that a woman has been killed and another attacked after getting out of their car while driving through the tiger enclosure at Badaling Wildlife World in Beijing, China. It is unclear why exactly the visitors left the vehicle, but dramatic video footage shows a woman being pounced upon by a large tiger and dragged away. It appears that this visitor miraculously survived. Sadly, we understand a second woman, believed to be a relative of the first, went to her aid and was fatally mauled.

Around the world, there have been several similar incidents at ‘safari parks’ recently. Last year, a tourist was killed and another injured in two separate attacks at a lion park in South Africa, when lions were able to attack visitors through open vehicle windows.

We are convinced that zoos and safari parks can never guarantee the safety of visitors or animals, and that safety measures commonly in place are woefully inadequate. The conditions in captive animal facilities in China are of great concern, and Born Free is working with our friends and colleagues in the region to push for genuine change that will benefit people and animals alike.
