Kariba the elephant: Relocation update
The latest news on the planned move of Kariba, from Belgian zoo Pakawi Park to Europe’s first large-scale elephant sanctuary, Pangea.

We know many of you have been eagerly awaiting news about Kariba’s journey to Pangea, and we want to share an important update.
Her move was planned for the end of this month, but just days before travel an abscess was discovered on her foot. These are common in elephants who have spent years in captivity, and thankfully they are very treatable with proper veterinary care.
We appreciate this is disappointing news for everyone who prepared for her arrival, but Kariba’s wellbeing comes first. We’re grateful the issue was found before she travelled, and she is now receiving the care she needs. We’ll share further updates as her progress becomes clearer.
Whilst Kariba’s move is temporarily delayed, we are continuing to plan for Julie’s arrival at Pangea. Just a few weeks ago, we announced that Julie, Portugal’s last circus elephant, will be joining Kariba at the sanctuary.
We’re deeply grateful to everyone standing with us and supporting their journeys.
Born Free is a founding member of Pangea along with Fondation Brigitte Bardot, Olsen Animal Trust and World Animal Protection. Kariba’s relocation is being made possible with the support of Belgian partner GAIA – Global Action in the Interest of Animals
