At 7.54am and 9.25pm today, Sunday 12th April, renowned actress and passionate animal activist, Jenny Seagrove, will be presenting Born Free’s first ever Ratio 4 Appeal, on our behalf.
As well as being a star of both stage and screen, Jenny Seagrove is a proud ambassador and trustee for Born Free, and actively supports our mission to protect wild animals around the world.
Jenny will be presenting our appeal to protect the iconic lions of Meru National Park in Kenya – Born Free’s heartland.
RADIO 4 APPEAL
It was in Meru that Elsa the lioness was raised and released by Joy and George Adamson: the true story that became the film ‘Born Free’ 60 years ago, opening the world’s eyes to the beauty of wild animals living free… and the tragedy of those held captive. It was more than a film, it was a movement, sparking a global shift in attitudes, and led to its stars, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, creating the Born Free Foundation.
Speaking at the recording of the appeal, Jenny Seagrove said: “I’ve supported Born Free for many years because I am passionate about wild animals, especially lions, and because I truly believe that wild animals belong in the wild. Their work isn’t just about rescuing animals, it’s about protecting habitats, campaigning against cruelty, and ensuring that future generations of wildlife can thrive.”
If you miss today’s broadcasts of the appeal, it will also be played again on Thursday 16th April, at 3.27pm – you can tune into any of the broadcasts live on Radio 4, or listen back on BBC Sounds.
We hope that Radio 4 listeners will feel inspired by Jenny’s heartfelt appeal on our behalf – this is a unique opportunity to help protect Meru’s lions for generations to come, and continue the Born Free legacy.
We need to find £400,000 this year to support this vital work, and we are aiming to kickstart our fundraising by raising £50,000 through this appeal. So please, dig deep and give what you can to help Meru’s lions.
