‘Wild and Free’ was the name of this year’s annual charity ball organised by our friends and long-term Born Free supporters, Val Hackett and Mike Carey, and raised over £17,000 for the rescue of big cats from captivity and to Keep Wildlife in the Wild.

Over 200 guests joined our Co-Founders Virginia McKenna OBE and Will Travers OBE, Ian Parkin from the Friday Night with Jonathan Ross house band 4 Poofs and a Piano, the Mayor and Mayoress of Burton, Councillor Colin Wileman and Jean Hiatt, and Ben Robinson, Chairman of Burton Albion Football Club.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment from Derby Grammar School Barbershop Choir, led by schoolmaster Nik Coley, saxophonist Byron Channer, a Q&A session with Virginia and Will, music by Monterey Road Show, and a lively auction by Born Free Patron James Lewis.

Virginia said: “It is hard to adequately express our gratitude for the incredible loyalty of Val and Mike, who have supported Born Free for over 17 years. And the same must be said of James our wonderful friend and auctioneer. These days there are many calls on people’s good will and generosity, and they have never failed us.”
