WEST KILIMANJARO FIELDMAN PROJECT

Animals: elephantsgiraffesprimateslionscheetahs
Supported since: 2000
Work: conservationeducation

Local Maasai villagers are trained to patrol the 700km² that encompasses their community, monitoring all wildlife and human activities in the area. Their presence has proved a key deterrent to illegal bushmeat hunters and poachers – one of the greatest threats to elephants, giraffe, lions and cheetah. Two conservation clubs educate local schoolchildren on safeguarding wildlife, and training courses support farmers in protecting crops and reducing conflict with elephants.
