WILD ANIMAL CIRCUSES IN SCOTLAND

Wild animals in travelling circuses have been banned in Scotland since May 2018. Scotland was the first country in the UK to outlaw the practice.

Following a public consultation which found that 98% of respondents supported a ban on the use of wild animals in travelling circuses, in 2016 the Scottish government announced that a Bill to ban the use of wild animals in circuses would be included in the 2016/2017 government programme. In 2017, the Bill was passed and began the parliamentary process towards becoming law.

The ban came into force on 28th May 2018, marking a successful end to a long campaign by Born Free and campaign partners including OneKind and Freedom for Animals.
