In honour of what would have been the 100th Birthday of Bill Travers MBE, we are celebrating our co-founder’s life and work by designating 2022 as Born Free’s Year of the Lion. Join us for a UK-wide exhibition - Born Free Forever - featuring 25 stunning life-size, bronze lion sculptures, which raise awareness and vital funds for lions through the Forever Lions Fund, set up in Bill's memory.
Born Free Forever is the biggest lion sculpture of its type in the UK and following three month residencies in London and Newcastle, the pride have arrived at Clifton Downs in Bristol and will be staying until the end of September, before heading to Edinburgh at the end the year.
We've also announced our huge, summer fundraiser, Walk on the Wild Side, challenging everyone to walk 20,000 steps in a day by the 10th August, World Lion Day, with each of the steps representing a living lion left in the wild.
Join us on Friday 23rd September for our 'MANE Event' at the beautiful Denbies Wine Estate, set in the heart of the stunning Surrey countryside.
We’re thrilled that our friends at Shamwari Private Game Reserve are partnering with us for the event – especially as it’s Shamwari’s 30th anniversary year and marks 25 years of us working together. As home to the majority of our rescued big cats, the Shamwari team are integral to our work, and we are absolutely delighted that some of them will join us on the night!
The evening will feature live entertainment and exclusive auction hosted by Born Free Patron, auctioneer James Lewis. Will Travers OBE and Virginia McKenna OBE would love to see you in person at this special evening, to mark our 'Year of the Lion' during 2022.
A hundred years ago, millions of gorillas and other apes lived peacefully in Africa’s forests, but today just a few thousand remain. Their habitat is logged and mined for natural resources, their vital forest eco-system is suffering from the effects of climate change, and these incredible animals are killed for bushmeat or poached for the illegal wildlife trade. Now, more than ever, our great ape cousins need Guardians.
Please donate today to save lives.
A year of action for lions in honour of the 100th birthday year of our charity’s fearless founder and lionheart, Bill Travers MBE. We're calling on the public to help halt the devastating decline in wild lions, campaign for the welfare of lions exploited in zoos, circuses and as ‘pets’ and support our Forever Lions fund.
Created in collaboration with Autism and Nature, this brand new set of resources has been created especially for children and young people with autism or special educational needs and disabilities. Students will learn all about African elephants, and species living in UK woodlands, with a beautifully illustrated, easy to use set of resources.
A stunning collection of wild lion photography by critically-acclaimed wildlife photographer George Logan. Lion: Pride Before the Fall brings the plight of Africa's remaining lions into sharp focus with its array of poignant, thought-provoking images.
Each copy sold helps the Born Free wildlife conservation charity in its vital work to protect and re-establish The Last Lions of Meru, in Kenya.
COVID-19 has transformed our world. We’ve had to radically change how we live to save lives. But, this is just a short-term fix.
Unless we change our ways and how we interact with wild animals, pandemics will become more frequent. As an essential first step, wildlife markets must close. We must learn. We must re-educate ourselves. We must act. Watch our new short film to find out how when we protect wild animals, we protect ourselves.
We’re a wildlife conservation charity that’s passionate about wild animal welfare and Compassionate Conservation. Founded by Virginia McKenna, Will Travers and Bill Travers, we work tirelessly to stop the exploitation and suffering of individual animals living in captivity or in the wild. From the start, we’ve campaigned for a future where animals and people can co-exist and where threatened and endangered species are protected for generations to come.
