Meru National Park, in Kenya, was the home of Elsa, the lioness made famous by the book and film Born Free. Elsa is the inspiration for our charity.
We work in Meru to safeguard the lions who call this national park home. They are Elsa’s legacy.
Donate today to fund our vital work monitoring, tracking, surveying and protecting Meru’s lion population.
Supported by Kingspan.
Meet Elsa. She was rescued by Born Free from a travelling circus in Sardinia in 2014 and was temporarily rehomed at a sanctuary in northern Italy due to an ongoing court case.
In 2018, Elsa was released from the terms of the court case. Happy at the sanctuary, we decided it’s best for Elsa to remain where she is.
You can help provide our Italian Elsa with lifetime care.
We’re an animal charity that’s passionate about wild animal welfare and compassionate conservation. As an international organisation, we work tirelessly to stop the exploitation and suffering of individual animals living in captivity or in the wild. From the start we’ve campaigned for a future where animals and people can coexist and where threatened and endangered species are protected for generations to come. #KeepWildlifeInTheWild

One of Amboseli National Park’s last great tuskers, Tim was one of Kenya’s most recognised elephants when he died in February 2020.
Limited edition prints of renowned wildlife artist Jonathan Truss’ painting – Last March of the Tuskers – are now available to purchase in aid of Born Free. It shows Tim alongside his uncle, and is assumed to be the last painting of him before his passing.
