Help ensure wild animals are given the greatest protection possible

Thank you for taking action to call on the UK government to ensure that wild animals are given the greatest protection possible at the 18th Conference of the Parties to CITES in August 2019.

Thank you for your support.

In August, government representatives from more than 180 countries will converge in Geneva, Switzerland, for the 18th Conference of the Parties to CITES. They will be joined by scientists, law enforcers, civil society groups, trade bodies and the media. I am aware that the UK will be sending a significant delegation which may have ministerial support. As you will be aware, the stated aim of CITES is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival, and in the event of uncertainty, its resolutions advocate a precautionary approach in the best interest of the conservation of the species concerned. I call on you, your Ministers and your officials to adopt a highly precautionary approach in the best interest of species conservation, and advocate for the maximum possible protection for wild species of animals and plants that are, or may be, adversely affected by trade. I also urge you to ensure that Britain’s representatives seek to encourage all Parties to fully implement the Convention in a transparent and accountable manner, and to advocate for the robust use of compliance measures against any that fail to do so. Thank you for your kind attention to this important matter.
