What is CoP26 and why is this climate change summit so important to our wildlife charity?
An interview with Born Free’s Policy Advisor and Wildlife Advocate Dominic Dyer.
What does CoP26 mean?
COP stands for the Conference of the Parties and will be attended by countries that signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) a treaty agreed in 1995. The 2021 meeting will be the 26th meeting, which is why it is called CoP26.
How is Born Free involved?
Born Free has worked with the Cabinet Office to put together a State of the Earth Question Time event in the Green Zone programme for CoP26. Building on the success of previous events held at the Birdfair festival at Rutland Wildlife Reserve in East Anglia, the event will be based on the format of the BBC current affairs programme, with questions for the speaker panel being led by the audience. It’ll take place on Sunday 7 November from 12.30 to 2.30pm at the I Max Cinema at the Science Centre in Glasgow.
I’ll be chairing the Question Time event, which will bring together a panel of thought leaders and influencers from across the age generations as follows :

What do you hope to achieve from Born Free’s event?
We hope to bring attention to the connection between climate change and the loss of habitats and species at home and abroad. We also want to focus on how we need to change the way we eat, travel, heat our homes, the clothes we wear, the waste we produce, to tackle climate change and protect the natural world.
We are seeking to focus on how best we can empower the next generation to avoid the mistakes we have made in the past and to come up with the technological solutions to deliver a climate change revolution, which is as revolutionary as the industrial revolution.
Why is it important for our wildlife charity to take action at this climate change summit?
Its very important that civic society is given a voice at CoP26 and its for this reason that Born Free has worked with the Cabinet Office to host an event which is interactive, covers a wide range of key issues relating to the future of the natural world at home and abroad and involves thought leaders from across the generations.
Can supporters get involved?
Yes, absolutely! 50 tickets have been put aside for Born Free supporters wishing to attend the event in person in Glasgow. If you would like to come along, we need confirmation of your name and email address in advance. Tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Please email dominicdyer@aol.com by Friday 29th October to secure your place! Tickets can also be obtained free of charge via the Cabinet Office Green Zone website.
The Question Time event will be also available to view live online from 12.30 to 2.30pm on Sunday 7 November via the Cabinet Office Green Zone website.
