Born Free Foundation - Keep Wildlife in the Wild

Worldwide Experience

Since 2003, Worldwide Experience (formerly Eco Africa) and Born Free have been working together to give people first-hand experience of working with dedicated conservation teams in Africa. A donation is given to the Born Free Foundation from each Worldwide Experience placement undertaken.

Worldwide Experience offers individuals the chance to contribute to global conservation and community programmes around the world. By combining conservation projects with community development and adventure programmes, they provide an opportunity for an unforgettable experience.

Worldwide Experience offers volunteer placements at the Shamwari Wildlife Reserve in South Africa and the Colobus Trust in Kenya both supported by the Born Free Foundation. Those who take these trips make a contribution to the Born Free Foundation as well as to ‘keeping wildlife in the wild’.

Worldwide Experience volunteers will actively get involved in the rehabilitation of primates and education of local communities on conservation. The Colobus Trust works hard to conserve the highly endangered Colobus monkey and many other primate species found in the area. Conservation volunteers will assist the conservation teams in their efforts to conserve these beautiful creatures.

Shamwari Wildlife Reserve, South Africa

Shamwari offers the ultimate in conservation volunteer placements. Shamwari, meaning ‘my friend’, is a ‘Big 5’ wildlife reserve in South Africa, boasting a huge variety of wildlife over a vast 20,000 hectares. Worldwide Experience volunteers will get the experience of a lifetime as they assist and adapt to the vital conservation work at Shamwari.

Situated in the Eastern Cape of South Africa Shamwari strives to conserve what humans are fast destroying. Set up in early 1990 by Adrian Gardiner, the reserve was the vision of one man’s dream to bring the once free roaming wildlife back to this part of Africa.

Born Free Foundation Rescue Centres

The two Born Free Foundation Education and Animal Rescue Centres are situated at Shamwari and are home to our rescued lions and leopards such as the Three Lions – Djunka, Nalla and Shada (rescued from a French circus). Worldwide Experience volunteers will get the opportunity to work with the team from the rescue centre and get an in-depth view of how the sanctuary works. At the Born Free Education Centre tourists and local children visit to learn about wildlife and how to keep it in the wild.
