Born Free Foundation - Keep Wildlife in the Wild

£10,754 Christmas donation 2015!

Our friends at Kuoni have blown their £10,000 fundraising target out of the water this year by raising a total of £10,754 for Born Free!

They have actively supported Born Free since 2003 and always surprised us with wonderful donations. This year, they hosted a Wild Night at the Movies in July, took part in a sponsored walk and contributed in many other ways including a monthly staff lottery and head office lunchtime sales.

This money will go towards Kuoni's continued support of our community and rescue work around the world, including our global friends child education project in Sri Lanka, the care of our rescued big cats in our sanctuary in South Africa and the building of predator-proof bomas in Kenya.

Kuoni - thank you!

Animal Footprint Training at Staff HQ

'On Thursday 24th September Daniel Turner visited our Kuoni Head Offices in Dorking to host animal footprint training with members of staff from retail, commercial, customer experience and communications. The feedback from those who attended was that the information provided by Daniel was incredibly useful and balanced and helped bring the subject of animal welfare to life.  It will help to raise awareness of this topic not only internally but externally and ensures that we are following best practice. This is a subject that Kuoni is very passionate about and it is great to have ongoing support from The Born Free Foundation who we have supported since 2003.'

Kuoni Sponsored Walk

On Sunday 13th September 2015 a team from Kuoni and Born Free walked 12k over the glorious Surrey Hills to raise money for our work.

Virginia McKenna came to see everyone off at the beginning of the adventure, the weather was bright and breezy and the team made good time to the top of Box Hill where they enjoyed the spectacular views over the Surrey countryside. The next stop was an amble through Denbies Wine Estate before returning through Dorking to Kuoni House. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the walk and early indications suggest that nearly £825 has been raised in sponsorship and donations to the Just Giving page.  If you would like to donate please click here.

A huge thank you to all those who supported this event by taking part or by sponsoring us.

First ever outdoor showing of Born Free movie a roaring success

Almost 200 people attended the first ever open air screening of the movie Born Free at the Dorking Headquarters of Kuoni, the worldwide travel company.

The award-winning travel firm hosted the event as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, which started selling holidays in the UK around the same time that Born Free was being shown in cinemas for the first time.

The film’s leading lady and our founder, Virginia McKenna OBE was at the event to introduce the film, along with her son Will Travers, our President.

A total of £2,400 was raised, all of which will go towards Born Free projects that 'combine Kuoni's interest in education, children and wildlife'. These include Born Free Kenya and specifically the Predator Proof Boma programme in the Amboseli region, support of schools and the local community affected by Human-elephant conflict in Sri Lanka and Born Free's Big Cat Rescue Centre in South Africa.

Virginia McKenna OBE said about the evening: “I just wanted to thank the team at Kuoni for making Tuesday night so special.  I really don’t think the weather was a negative element, as people manfully put on their macs and put up their brollies!

I do understand what a huge amount of work goes into putting on such a big event, but thanks to Kuoni’s efforts the evening seemed to go very smoothly."

Community Outreach Equipment Handover

Kuoni’s Elaine Foster recently paid a visit our office in Nairobi to handover some much needed new equipment for our community outreach work. Many of the projects we support are aimed at engaging with and securing involvement and support of local communities in conservation issues and since 2007 Born Free Kenya has been actively involved in delivering a conservation education programme to local communities and schools in rural areas. We were therefore extremely grateful when Kuoni offered to provide us with  funds raised from events and staff involvement  for new equipment to help us carry out this work with items including a generator, projector, screen, DVD player and portable PA system.

December 2013

On Thursday 6th December Virginia McKenna visited Kuoni’s headquarters in Dorking, Surrey to thank the staff for raising an impressive £6000 for the charity.

Kuoni, who have been a loyal supporter of the Born Free Foundation for the past 10 years, has raised the money through a series of fundraising events that have taken place over the past year including their ever popular monthly lottery, the Grand Unwanted Christmas Present Sale as well as a foreign coin collection and various lunchtime sales. Staff at Kuoni raised £3000, which was matched by the company making it a grand total of £6000.

Elaine Foster, Kuoni’s Born Free ambassador said, “We have many loyal supporters of the Born Free Foundation at Kuoni, myself being one of them. In the past 10 years we have enjoyed raising over £200,000 for Born Free and we know exactly where our money goes, such as various projects in Kenya including de-snaring projects, lion-proof Boma’s and Manyatta School, where we have helped build new classrooms with desks, a new library and a tree nursery. As a travel company we sell holidays to Kenya so it’s nice to know that we are helping to make a difference not only to the wildlife but also the local people.”

Kuoni matched the result of two years’ worth of staff fundraising efforts which included activities such as a monthly lottery, lunchtime sales and a foreign coin collection to reach this amazing total! The donation is to be put towards the building of lion proof bomas, the provision of books for Manyatta School as well as anti-poaching projects.

Manyatta Primary School Update

The children and teachers at Manyatta School continue to flourish thanks to the extremely generous support that Kuoni has provided.  Good qualifications for students have become a much more realistic target, something that was never truly possible previously (when the children used to sit on the dirt floor and only came to school irregularly).  The long-term benefits that this support from Kuoni is likely to bring are significant, not only for the individual children, but also for their families and the wider community.

The most recent support from Kuoni has been targeted at purchasing educational books for the new library, so that the children have a wider set of resources to enhance their learning.  These books have been purchased and some have already been delivered to the library, with the remaining books due to arrive before the end of the year. New desk chairs (a chair with a small writing desk attached) are also being constructed for the students now that, thanks to Kuoni's efforts, enrolment at the school has increased.

Youth for Conservation

Kuoni sponsors the work of Youth for Conservation in Kenya which has included bushmeat investigations, public awareness activities and a number of snare removal operations in various parts of Kenya.
