Brian May

Brian May, Kerry Ellis and Virginia at the Pride of Cape Town

Brian May CBE first met Virginia McKenna at the Hay-On-Wye Literary Festival in 2010. They are both dedicated to protecting threatened animals, with Brian’s Save-Me Trust working alongside Born Free to campaign for the humane treatment of all animals, protection of threatened species, and ending individual animal suffering.

Brian presented Virginia with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2011 Wetnose Burgess Rescue Awards, the awards that recognise the hard work of small rescue charities in the UK and overseas, as well as honouring the work of individuals committed to protecting animals.

In June 2011, Brian May and West End star Kerry Ellis performed a special rendition of ‘Born Free’ at London’s The Savoy hotel at a star-studded event to celebrate Virginia McKenna’s 80th birthday.

In March 2012, Brian and Kerry helped to launch ‘Pride of Cape Town’, a major public arts event that saw a fabulous pride of 50 life-size lion sculptures prowling the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town in the summer of 2013 in aid of Born Free.

On November 5th 2012 Brian and Kerry released their own version of the Oscar winning song 'Born Free', as well as embarking on the Born Free Tour, all in aid of the Born Free Foundation. See the video, download the song and find out how you can help lions here >.
