Irresistible Matilda is just one and a half years. Matilda had lost her mother and exhausted and malnourished - was found roaming with a herd of domestic water buffalo who had become her surrogate family. The little one was scared of humans and is still nervous, hiding in the middle of the herd of orphans. However, with Dr Suhada and his team’s expert care she is gradually adjusting to her new surroundings. We look forward to seeing her confidence develop as she grows, until one day she is old enough to follow her predecessors back to the wild. 

Roque (‘Rocky’) was only a few days old when he was taken from his mother and put on sale in a Spanish pet-shop. Born Free rescued the adorable cub and today this beautiful mischievous tiger lives in a jungle enclosure at our special tiger sanctuary in India. 

Emily Kate is one of the youngest members of the famous EB elephant family, born on August 3rd 2000. The family live in Amboseli National Park, Kenya, led by Emily Kate’s mother, the wise matriarch Echo. Playful Emily Kate is a happy and independent young calf, named by Born Free patron Martin Clunes after his own little daughter. 

Afrika was just a few months old when her mother and family were killed by poachers. The tiny baby was found in a wooden cage - filthy, scared and malnourished. Luckily she was rescued and nursed back to health at a sanctuary in Uganda. Here she has become friends with Mac, another orphan chimp. The pair get great comfort from cuddling each other.

Magnificent Mugaruka and Chimanuka are extremely rare Eastern Lowland gorillas in DR Congo. Gorillas may be powerful, but they are peaceful vegetarians who live in close-knit groups. Both our males are massive ‘silverbacks’ in charge of families, but poor Mugaruka has a major disability, he lost a hand in a poacher’s snare.

Springer is an orphan orca, who was just a baby when she became lost after her mother died. Sickly and alone, she was found swimming near Seattle, USA, but was identified by her calls. Springer was reunited with her family, the A4 orca pod, off the coast of British Columbia, Canada. Today the close-knit family feed, rest, play and travel together.. 

Achee (‘Ah-kee’) was rescued by Born Free from a snowy car-park in Romania. Her companion Ma Juah was
saved from a concrete pit in Liberia. Both girls wobble they suffer nerve problems due to poor early diets. But
they’ve grown stronger in their bush enclosure at our sanctuary in South Africa, and have become friends.

The Sodatas are a close-knit family of wolves, who live in Ethiopia’s Bale Mountains. The Ethiopian wolf is even more rare than the giant panda and only 500 survive. The Sodatas are led by an ‘alpha’ male and female and every pack member helps care for their three pups. Sadly disease, persecution and habitat loss are a constant threat.

Sinbad is a friendly and beautiful lion who urgently needs adoptive parents. He is only six years old and should be in his prime. But this thin young male is desperately undersized and his teeth are broken and worn. Sinbad was rescued by Born Free from a cramped and rusty cage in a Romanian zoo in July 2007. He is half the size of a normal lion and was kept on a bare concrete floor with only an old log and car tyre for ‘enrichment’. Thanks to Born Free Sinbad now lives in a large natural enclosure at our big cat sanctuary in South Africa. But he will always rely on our protection. Helpless and alone, the three leopard cubs were foud abandoned in the Sudanese bush in March 2001. Born Free launched an emergency rescue and brought the cubs to Shamwari where today they flourish in their large, natural habitat enclosure.

For years she was kept in a rusty cage at a circus in France, gazing pitifully through the bars. She barely had room to move and was never let out. Ancient green turtles have existed since before dinosaurs, but are now extremely rare due to exploitation, disturbed nesting beaches, and polluted seas. Today the gentle greens, the only vegetarian turtle, are hunted for eggs and meat, and used for turtle soup.

Gentle Ginny lives at Animals Asia’s bear sanctuary in SW China. She was rescued from a cruel bear farm where she was painfully ‘milked’ for her bile, used in Asian medicine. Today she has recovered and explores her bamboo forest, swims in her pool and plays on climbing frames.
