Threats
to turtles are both natural and human-induced.
Natural
factors influencing the survival of turtles and their nests
include; high tides reaching the back of the beach inundating
nests; predation by monitor lizards, honey badgers or dogs;
predation of hatchlings on their way to the sea by opportunistic
birds or crabs.
Human-induced
threats include pollution; poaching of nesting females for
their meat and shell; poaching of turtle eggs; capture and
subsequent drowning in fishing nets and coastal development. |
