Species Status

In Tanzania, turtles are protected under Tanzania Fisheries legislation which means that it is illegal to hunt turtles, poach their eggs or be in possession of any turtle products including shells.

All 5 species of turtles are included on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species which classifies hawksbills and leatherbacks as "critically endangered" and green, loggerhead and olive ridleys as "endangered".

They are also listed on Appendix I of CITES and are included in the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).
