Dugongs in Tanzania

The first tangible evidence of the continued survival of dugongs in Tanzanian waters for 74 years was provided in early 2004, when two animals drowned in gillnets in the shallow seagrass beds between Mafia Island and the Rufiji Delta were delivered to Sea Sense / Mafia Fisheries Office. In 2005, another four animals also drowned in gillnets (three in the Rufiji-Mafia area and one off the east coast of Zanzibar). Live dugongs have also been reported in the Rufiji-Mafia area in November 2004 and July 2005.
