Introduction

Dugongs (Dugong dugon) are gentle marine mammals found in shallow coastal waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. They are long-lived, slow breeding animals which feed exclusively on seagrasses.
Dugongs are the most endangered marine mammal of the Western Indian Ocean. Once abundant in Tanzania, populations have declined due to hunting, net captures and habitat degradation and until recently they were believed to have disappeared from Tanzania’s tropical waters
