Species Status

Globally, dugongs are disappearing; they are classified by the IUCN as Vulnerable to extinction and are listed on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The critical status of this species, their importance to biodiversity conservation and the lack of knowledge concerning their abundance and ecology has recently been reiterated (UNEP/WWF 2004).
