Born Free welcomes today’s news that Arsenal Football Club’s largest shareholder, Stan Kroenke, has ordered all bloodsports content be removed from his My Outdoor TV pay-per-view channel.

The wise decision follows a massive public outcry against the channel’s plans to feature explicit hunting footage, including the killing of lions, elephants and other iconic and threatened animals by trophy hunters.

In response to the news, Born Free’s President and Arsenal supporter, Will Travers OBE, said: “Mr Kroenke’s change of heart is most welcome. He clearly recognised the overwhelming strength of British public feeling on this issue (including among Arsenal supporters) and for that we thank him. Anyone who has a beating heart would be sickened by images of grown men and women celebrating the killing of wild lions and other iconic species for ‘fun’, and such images have no place on our TV screens.

We recognise Mr Kroenke’s quick and decisive response to widespread public concern and I personally invite him to go further and meet with me to explore ways that, together, we can promote effective, responsible and sustainable wildlife tourism and compassionate conservation.”

Born Free, founded by Virginia McKenna OBE and her late husband, Bill Travers (who starred in the 1966 wildlife movie classic Born Free), is opposed to the killing of any animal for sport or pleasure, and strives to highlight to policymakers and the public the negative impacts of trophy and sport-hunting activities on the welfare of individual wild animals and the conservation of wild species. Born Free seeks to identify and implement alternative and significantly more productive and compassionate non-consumptive wildlife conservation strategies that can also provide sustainable, lasting benefits to local communities.
