On 28th November 2007, the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) began the confiscation of wild animals kept at private residences or traded illegally in Bali, in advance of the island hosting a landmark meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The animals were confiscated from hotels, villas and art shops, as well as private residences.

The operation was supported by the ProFauna Indonesia Bali office, which is funded by the Born Free Foundation and Humane Society International. Officers successfully rescued six cockatoos, a sea eagle and six Olive Ridley turtles as well as an elephant ivory tusk priced at 150 million rupees (over £7,800), 400 sea turtle eggs (trade in which is illegal), three crocodile’s skulls and 10 cassowary eggs. Most of the confiscated wild animals will now be kept temporarily in the Animal Rescue Center (PPS), Bali.

Bali has a history of high levels of illegal turtle trading, which ProFauna is committed to tackling. I Wayan Wiradnyana, ProFauna Bali coordinator said “as the host of UNFCCC, Bali needs to show that this island which is rich in natural and cultural beauties is free from wild animal trade.”
