Emily Kate is a little wild elephant who in south-east Kenya. She lives with her family in Amboseli Park by Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s tallest mountain. Called the ‘EBs’, the elephant family is very famous – they have been filmed for a BBC tv series called ‘Echo of the Elephants’. Born Free protects Emily Kate and the EB family and keeps them safe from ivory poachers.
Emily Kate was born on 3rd August 2000. She weighed around 100kg – as much as 40 human babies! Her mother was Echo, who gave birth at the age of 55, after a 22 month pregnancy. Echo was the wise leader of the EBs, known as a ‘matriarch’. Emily Kate was her seventh calf and relied on her mother’s milk for four years. The rest of the herd helped look after her, especially her big sisters Ebony and Eliot.
Like all Echo’s daughters Emily Kate is brave and playful. She was named by Born Free patron Martin Clunes after his own little daughter. On 12th January 2005 Echo – gave birth to a new calf, another little girl called Esprit. Emily Kate takes her role of big sister very seriously. She’s always on hand to look after little Esprit, just like her big sisters kept a careful eye on her!
