Born Free Foundation - Keep Wildlife in the Wild

Global Friends

Born Free wants everyone to learn to love wild animals and give them respect.  We think education is really important.  Through our Global Friends project we help local communities.  We help find solutions so people and wildlife can live together happily.

Through Global Friends Born Free also helps schools in Africa.  These schools are close to our projects protecting wild animals.  We provide them with vital equipment.  Born Free builds entire schools and classrooms.  We give them loads of brilliant stuff like books, desks, computers, pens and paper.

By supporting schools Born Free is helping give local school kids a good start to life.  We give them great opportunities for the future.  The children learn about their local wildlife and find out how they can help protect wild animals.  They find out how looking after animals can help people!

My name’s Shelley and I know we all love wild animals – they’re the ultimate in cool!

But what about the people who have to share their daily lives with spectacular and possibly dangerous creatures? Learning to live alongside elephants, lions and chimpanzees can be a real challenge.

That’s why I’m so please that Born Free created Global Friends, to help make sure that we can all get along. Global Friends communities live in countries like Kenya, South Africa, Uganda and India and often have to share resources like water, food and habitat with wild animals – hey, it can be hard when you find your path to school blocked by an elephant!

I make sure that Born Free helps our 12 Global Friends communities in a number of ways. We build new classrooms, or maybe a community kitchen, or perhaps we set up a protected vegetable area to help feed people and produce something to sell in the market. Some schools really need the basics, like desks and blackboards – remember they don’t all have electricity! In others, computers give kids the chance to learn new skills.

And the reason we’re able to help is thanks to the animals. That’s the reason we’re there in the first place. With Global Friends everyone wins – the community, the kids and the wildlife.

Every two months I’ll introduce you to more Global Friends – update you on projects and show you how we can make a better world for us all!
