Pobjoy Mint launches commemorative coin to celebrate the birth of Joy Adamson

On January 28th, Pobjoy Mint, based in Kingswood, Surrey, launched a commemorative coin to mark the Centenary of the Birth of Joy Adamson, the Austrian naturalist and author who dedicated her life to the animals of Africa. Born Free Foundation will receive a £1 donation for each coin sold to help save lions in Africa. Virginia McKenna OBE was invited to strike the very first coin in this series.

The commemorative coin was produced on behalf of the Bank of Sierra Leone and depicts a design featuring Joy’s beloved lions. What sets this coin apart is the yellow-coloured crystal that is set into the centre of the coin. The third coin in the world to include real crystal, it features the etched image of a lioness. The obverse of the coin features the Sierra Leone Coat of Arms and is available in Proof Sterling Silver with Crystal inset.

Sierra Leone (meaning Lion Mountains) is situated on the West coast of Africa, while Kenya is situated on the East. Although miles apart, the habitat between the two countries have similarities; sandy beaches on the coast, rainforest, mountains and dry savannah. Sierra Leone is home to many species of mammals and birds including 11 different species of primate, Elephant and Hippo. The work of Joy Adamson has raised awareness of the conservation of animals all over Africa.
