As you probably know, 2009 is a very special year for the Born Free Foundation, our Silver Anniversary. That’s 25 years of wild animal conservation, protection, rescue and care. To kick off our special year we held a major event at London’s prestigious Royal Geographical Society, hosted by Virginia McKenna and Will Travers, on Wednesday 18th March.
The wonderful evening of talks in the Ondaatje Theatre featured a wide range of special guests including patron Martin Clunes, senior consultant Ian Redmond OBE, activist Ofir Drori, actress Rula Lenska, elephant-expert Winnie Kiiru, animal behaviourist Dr Roger Mugford and Born Free vet John Knight. The packed audience of supporters, friends and sponsors were enthralled by tales of how Born Free began, stories from the early days and animal adventures from across the years.
Visitors also enjoyed walking around Born Free’s fascinating exhibition full of lions, elephants, gorillas, tigers, wolves, dolphins and many more species. They discovered how Born Free fights captive suffering, rescues individuals and protects rare species. The new Silver Anniversary brochure, published that day, proved a smash hit, and supporters also queued to buy signed copies of Virginia McKenna’s memoirs – The Life in My Years.
All in all, the event – full of emotion, memories and passion for wildlife - was a unique opportunity to look back over the years, reflect on Born Free’s achievements for animals and be inspired by our plans for the future.
