Message from Born Free President, Will Travers

XP Club - Reach For the Sky!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of the XP Club and its founders, Riky and Harj,  two of the Born Free Foundation’s key areas of work for wildlife and communities are set to benefit in 2018.

SeaSeanse is an amazing charity working in Tanzania to protect the several species of Endangered marine turtles that are found along is Indian Ocean shoreline. It is not an exaggeration to say that as many as one hundred thousand marine turtles are alive -  wild and free - today, thanks to SeaSense, an organisation that Born Free has been supporting for more than 15 years. Marine turtles are some of the most enigmatic creatures on the planet. Once they hatch, and if they make it to the sea, they disappear for many years until the females return to the very same beach to lay their eggs. Egg-laying is a time of considerable risk, as these huge animals are slow and defenceless when on land. They are routinely hunted – even if it’s against the law. The nests of eggs are often raided, both by predators and by humans, and tens of thousands of eggs are taken every year. Then, when the eggs hatch, the tiny turtles, not much larger than a plum, must run the gauntlet from the nest to the water. During that time they are easy pickings. Without SeaSense, the majority of potential baby turtles would not make it to the relative safety of the sea. That is why the charity’s work is so important.

But people are important too! That is why the XP Club will be raising funds for Born Free’s community programme in East Africa. Born Free works with a number of communities and thousands of teachers, parents and children who live alongside wildlife. We support infrastructure improvements in some of the poorest communities in the world, help schools develop, provide educational resources, and tackling issues such as lack of renewable energy and clean water.

Local communities play a pivotal role in the protection of wildlife. Therefore, engaging them is an important step in a holistic approach to conservation. As part of this approach Born Free Kenya have long been working with schools near Amboseli National Park and more recently Meru National Park to help the students learn about their wild neighbours and tackle environmental challenges that impact both people and wildlife.

It is vital that these communities see wildlife and conservation as beneficial but this is rarely the case when the resources that wildlife can generate bypass them. If we are going to help create a more compassionate world then every life - human and animal – matters.

The XP Club have set themselves a target of raising £50,000. If they reach their target then 50% of the funds raised will go towards protecting Tanzania’s marine turtles with SeaSense, and 50% will go towards supporting local communities and improving the lives of the people who share their world with the wild animals we so admire.

Please play your part. Sponsor the intrepid climbers who are taking on one of the great challenges - climbing the highest mountain in Africa - Mount Kilimanjaro.

I have done it twice and I can confirm that this is no ‘walk in the park’. Some people do not reach the summit – some people do not make it at all. The training, the gradients, the lack of oxygen and the sheer physicality of climbing to nearly 20,000 feet above sea level cannot and should not be under-estimated. But the sense of achievement when you stand on the top, survey the world below you, hug each and every one of your fellow climbers, and know that every pound, dollar or euro you have raised will be helping a great cause - makes it all totally worthwhile.

So support the XP Club Kilimanjaro Expedition 2018; support the development of some of East Africa’s most challenged local communities; and support the conservation of wildlife in the wild – where it belongs!

Thank you on behalf of us all.
