Fighting Climate Change, Helping People, Saving Wildlife

Climate change is a reality that will affect us all.  The world’s richest fuel global warming while the world’s poorest are already feeling the consequences.  In Kenya, for example, it has been estimated that the average Kenyan produces less than 3% of the CO2 emissions produced by the average British citizen.

It is not only humans that suffer – wildlife is also greatly impacted, with changing climates resulting in drying waterholes, desertification and much more.

We have, therefore, been given a great responsibility.  We can either bury our heads in the sand and hope it will go away, or we can stand up and do something positive about it.

By becoming a Born Free ‘Carbon Campaigner’ you will be supporting the protection of wildlife and significantly improving the lives of rural communities in Kenya.  By donating an amount of money whenever you take a flight, you will be contributing to the reafforestation of the Mount Kenya National Reserve (part of a World Heritage Site) while at the same time off-setting your carbon emissions.  (More details about the Born Free carbon project)

Why fight Climate Change with Born Free?

Born Free believes that offsetting carbon emissions should not be for profit or to fund research for the private sector, but to support the protection and improvement of the world’s environment for everyone’s benefit.

Born Free works in some of the most remote regions in Africa, areas which are also home to some of the poorest communities in the world.  We have found that there is an intrinsic link between poverty and the environment.  By taking a holistic approach to wildlife conservation and environmental protection, almost every project supported by Born Free also provides some kind of benefit to the local community.

As a Born Free Carbon Campaigner, you will be directly supporting local communities (and in particular women’s groups), providing vital habitats for wildlife, and reducing your impact on the planet through carbon offsetting – it doesn’t get much better than that!

How do I sign up?

It’s simple!  We have divided the world into four zones (see the table below) according to the distance they are from the UK.  You can work out the cost of offsetting your flight by simply checking to see which zone you have travelled to.

ZONE Regions in this zone Cost of offsetting (return flights from the UK)
1 Europe (including Western Russia) and North Africa £5
2 Asia (east as far as India), Central Russia, East Coast United States and the Caribbean £15
3 East, West & Central Africa, Eastern Russia, Rest of Asia (excl. Japan and China) all Central and South America £25
4 South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Hawaii and Pacific Islands £45

If you would like to help offset your carbon footprint please donate the relevant amount in one of the following ways:

IMPORTANT: At the Born Free Foundation we do not believe that offsetting is the only solution to climate change.  We must all take urgent and immediate action to reduce our carbon imprint on this planet.  Please think carefully before you go on that flight. However, if you do decide to fly, please become a Born Free Carbon Campaigner to offset that carbon!
