Banning UK Sales of Ivory

Ivory

More than 20,000 African Elephants are being slaughtered each year by poachers for their tusks, to supply ivory into illegal markets in the Far East and across the globe. Africa’s elephant populations have plummeted from maybe 5 million a century ago, to less than half a million today.

While international trade in ‘new ivory’ has been banned for some years, domestic markets continue to thrive, and older items are traded internationally, stimulating interest in and demand for ivory and providing poachers and traffickers with a means to launder ‘new’ ivory from slaughtered elephants into trade. The UK is currently the world’s largest exporter of ‘antique’ ivory items.

The government is consulting on its proposal to implement a total ban on ivory sales in the UK, and to prohibit the import and export of ivory, including intra-EU trade to and from the UK, with some narrowly defined exemptions. Details of the consultation can be found at https://consult.defra.gov.uk/international/banning-uk-sales-of-ivory/.

We need as many people as possible to respond to the consultation, urging the government to implement its proposed ban without delay, and to ensure any exemptions cannot adversely impact living elephants. The consultation period ends on 29th December 2017.

There are three ways to respond to the consultation:

By post, to:

International Team – Ivory consultation, Area 1E, Nobel House, 17 Smith Square, London SW1P 3JR

By Email to:

ivoryconsultation@defra.gsi.gov.uk

By completing the online survey at:

https://consult.defra.gov.uk/international/banning-uk-sales-of-ivory

Responses can be in the form of a simple statement supporting the urgent need for the UK to implement a total ban on ivory sales, to more detailed answers to the questions posed in the consultation document (the same questions appear in the online survey).

Born Free has compiled some suggested responses to the questions to help members of the public complete the survey. These can be found below.

Whether you send a detailed response, or a simple message to government urging them to implement the proposed ban without delay, your voice is important.
