Born Free Foundation - Keep Wildlife in the Wild

Animals are not rubbish

ANIMALS ARE NOT RUBBISH WINNERS ANNOUNCED

In March 2009, Orion Children’s Books, the Born Free Foundation and Waterstone’s announced the launch of a nationwide competition to raise awareness of animal conservation and encourage children to think about why wildlife is important, by making models of endangered animals from recycled material.

We were astounded, both by the reaction from schools across the country, receiving hundreds of entries from class groups, clubs and individuals, and by the quality of the entries received. If we thought that the short- listing process was a tough job, and only 24 animals made the shortlist, then that was nothing compared to the unenviable task facing our judges of picking out just two winners (and as you will see below, we ended up with two, plus two commended!).

The shortlist can still be seen on the website: www.animalsarenotrubbish.co.uk The judges were: author Lauren St John, Virginia McKenna and Will Travers from the Born Free Foundation, actors Martin Clunes and Ruth Wilson - Born Free supporters and from Orion Children’s Books Publisher Fiona Kennedy.

The judges' thoughts on the process:

Lauren St John:
‘The talented, creative children who have taken part in our competition have sent out a resounding message that endangered animals are NOT rubbish. They've also proved that thousands of children, teachers and librarians across Britain care very deeply that one in four mammals face extinction and want to do everything they can to prevent that. I, for one, find that extremely heartening and inspirational.’

Martin Clunes:
‘What a great 'rubbish' idea. The standard of entries was so high even I found it hard to judge such ' a load of rubbish’! The children have done a fantastic job and what a great way to help wildlife'

Virginia McKenna, OBE:
‘This incredible exhibition proves many things. How talented and imaginative children are and how animal ‘sculptures’ can be made from everything and anything. How can one choose between the mournful orangutan and the friendly panda, the endearing elephant and the striding cheetah? It was so difficult! The children have created animals to treasure and shown us that everything has a value. A message we should all remember’.
