This afternoon, the Born Free Foundation and UK MEP Keith Taylor hosted a round-table discussion in the European Parliament on the EU Zoo Directive (the EU law that requires zoos to conserve biodiversity) and the conditions for animals in zoos.

Attended by Members of the European Parliament, representatives from the European zoo association, the European Commission and NGOs, discussions focused on the need to support European national governments to ensure effective law enforcement and the desperate efforts needed to improve the welfare of animals kept in zoos. All attendees agreed that improvements were only possible through multi-stakeholder collaboration and through greater commitment by national governments to improve enforcement and zoo compliance. The Born Free Foundation is hosting an exhibition of photos taken at European zoos, throughout this week, in order to encourage change.
