Yesterday, the Latvian Government approved the country’s new Animal Protection Act, which includes a clause that ends the use of animals of wild species in circuses.

The news has been welcomed by Born Free and other animal protection NGOs across the European Union. Latvia joins seven other EU countries that have prohibited the use of all wild animals in circuses.

“Through our work with our European colleagues in the ENDCAP coalition, there is still a lot of work to be done to ensure all EU countries to prohibit the use of wild animals in circuses,” said Daniel Turner at the Born Free Foundation. “However, we congratulate our Latvian colleagues, Animal Friends Fund, for their tireless work and this momentous achievement.”

Meanwhile in the UK, and despite promises first made by the Westminster Government in 2012 that a ban would be introduced in England, only Scotland appears to be pursuing an imminent ban.
