An initiative led by ALDE MEPs Bill Newton Dunn and Jelko Kacin in collaboration with the Born Free Foundation and European coalition, ENDCAP, will provide an opportunity for MEPs to find out about The EU Zoo Inquiry 2011, an evaluation of the implementation and enforcement of the EC Zoos Directive (1999/22) in 21 EU Member States, and meet and question its authors.
Discussion will include the role of zoos in the conservation of biodiversity, an overview of their current activities and an indication how the Parliament could help ensure greater compliance with the Zoos Directive and its objectives, better conditions for animals in zoos and a phasing-out of facilities that are unable to meet the grade.
Representatives of the European Commission will attend and provide an overview of their actions, which are addressing the issues of non-compliance identified by the investigation.
