After many years of campaigning, the Born Free Foundation is delighted that Anne, the 58 year-old arthritic elephant, has finally been retired from ‘Bobby Roberts Super Circus’. However, we are mindful not to forget about the approximately 40 other wild animals that remain in UK circuses.
Animals unfortunate enough to be used by circuses today are living miserable lives of extended periods of confinement, long-haul transportation, and inadequate housing in “beastwagons”, all in the name of entertainment.
After a positive statement from Secretary of State for Defra, Caroline Spelman, the Born Free Foundation is hopeful that a ban of wild animals in circuses will come into force in England. Now is the time to make your voice heard to ensure that a ban is implemented, and to call on the Government to make certain that a ban will be enforced without delay!

Dear [Insert the name of your MP]
I was encouraged to hear comments from Secretary of State for Defra, Caroline Spelman, in which she stated that ‘forcing elephants, tigers, lions, camels and other exotic creatures to perform tricks for audiences is wrong in modern Britain.’
While I welcome the news that the Government is taking the ban on wild animals in circuses seriously, I urge you to personally ensure that a ban on wild animals in circuses is implemented in England and that proposed legislation will be treated as a top priority and enacted without delay so as to minimise the suffering of the remaining wild animals in circuses.
Thank you for your consideration.
Signed,
