Contact your MP before Christmas to End Animal Circuses

The Born Free Foundation is calling on the UK Government to use the upcoming review of the licensing regime for wild animals in circuses in England to put circuses on “final notice” and lay out a firm timetable for the long overdue ban. We are asking supporters to contact their MPs before the end of the year to suggest that they support the repeal of the licensing regime as it comes up for review in the next month.

Born Free’s Head of Animal Welfare Chis Draper said: “This will be the sixth year since the Government promised to ban the use of wild animals in circuses in England, but wild animals still remain under the circus big top. The Government has a perfect opportunity to use the review of the temporary licensing regime to take steps to repeal circus animal licensing and bring in the ban. We hope that MPs support our efforts to see this long-overdue measure introduced”.

Please take action today! Use the link below to find out the contact details for your MP and write to them to call for action. A template letter can be found below, as well as a link to our new briefing document on the issue.

Dear [Name],

The Welfare of Wild Animals in Travelling Circuses (England) Regulations 2012 were introduced as a temporary measure to license the use of wild animals in circuses in 2013. Despite repeated promises that the Government would introduce a ban on the use of wild animals in travelling circuses in England, at the end of 2017, these Regulations remain in place and animals remain under the big top.

According to legislative rules, the Government is obliged, before the 20th January 2018, to review the Regulations, then produce and publish a report. I am joining the call from the Born Free Foundation for the Government to take this opportunity to confirm the repeal of the Regulations and establish a final timetable for the implementation of the ban on the use of wild animals in travelling circuses. A draft Bill is already available in draft form and was originally due for implementation by the end of 2015.

As you know, the ban on the use of wild animals in circuses has widespread support among the public, Parliamentarians and the press. Please read Born Free’s new briefing document and support the call to end the use of wild animals in circuses in England in the New Year.

I look forward to your response.

Best wishes,
