Zoo Check monitors hundreds of zoos

Born Free’s Zoo Check team undertakes research into all issues concerning captive wild animal welfare.  Up-to-date information is vital and by visiting and assessing animal ‘attractions’ Zoo Check is able to maintain accurate records of the status and performance of hundreds of zoos, circuses and other captive facilities.

Campaigning

Taking action on the front line

Born Free’s high-profile campaigns focus on changing public attitudes, informing decision-makers, and giving captive wild animals a voice. Whether it is exposing malpractice and poor conditions endured by captive wild animals, challenging a planning application to establish a new zoo, or raising greater awareness about captive animal suffering and neglect, Born Free takes action on the front line for captive wild animals.

Improving legislation

High standards and expert guidance to ensure better animal welfare are the first steps in creating better lives for animals. Born Free’s Zoo Check programme promotes and encourages adherence to existing legislation, investigates and exposes examples of non-compliance, and participates in working groups and consultation in the drafting of improved legislation. Born Free recently participated in the drafting of the Animal Welfare Act 2006, Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006 and is an invited member of the Circus Working Group; Born Free continues to consult on related secondary legislation for England, Scotland and Wales.

Education

Through multimedia, ground-breaking publications, high-profile campaigns and presentations to schools, universities and the public, Born Free’s Zoo Check programme influences and encourages a change in opinion away from keeping wild animals in captivity, in favour of their protection in the wild. Working with local communities, other organisations, the travel industry and governments, Born Free informs and influences decision-makers and inspires people, young and old, to respect wildlife.

Working with others

Working with others is the key to the success of the Born Free Foundation.  Born Free’s Zoo Check programme works with many like minded organisations across the world, the UK travel industry and other corporate enterprises, achieving more for animals with greater efficiency.
