At Ensessakotteh, Born Free will provide rehabilitation facilities and lifetime care for injured and orphaned animals as well as for wild animals confiscated from illegal trade and ownership as space, finance and expertise allows. Wherever possible, and where there is no danger to humans, rescued animals will be released back in to the wild in collaboration with the EWCA.
Born Free Foundation will provide the highest standards of care and rehabilitation for each animal, providing spacious, naturalistic enclosures that allow the animals privacy and an enriching environment. A veterinary clinic will also be constructed, offering the country a much-needed wildlife resource. Thomson Airways have very generously donated the funding for the construction of the vet centre.
Since Born Free Foundation established its regional office in Ethiopia in 2008, young and orphaned wild animals have already been brought forward to Born Free so we can provide them with a better future.
Dolo, a lion kept on a chain for the first four years of his life, was rescued and recently brought to Ensessakotteh - see below for a video of the rescue and translocation of Dolo.
The following introduce the animals that Born Free Foundation Ethiopia in partnership with the EWCA has rescued and which we will be given lifetime care at the Wildlife Rescue, Conservation and Education Centre.
As the Centre takes shape and receives a higher profile within Ethiopia, we believe that further animals in poor situations will be brought to Born Free’s attention and demands on resources will increase.
