Born Free Foundation Ethiopia has a concession to develop and manage the 77 hectare site.  A Masterplan is currently being designed to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing design to complement the beautiful landscape of the area.

Environmentally-friendly construction materials will be used wherever possible.  Animal enclosures will be built to international standards to ensure high levels of animal welfare and public safety.

The Masterplan will include:

  • Wild animal care facilities (with selected public access)
  • Veterinary and Quarantine facilities
  • Environmental Education and Visitor Centre. The Visitor Centre will include an exhibition area with the story of the Centre, information on the threats to Ethiopian wild animals and habitat and current conservation programmes.  There will also be a classroom and conference facility, café, play area, and gift shop.
  • Other Visitor facilities will include accommodation, and a nature trail.

Development of the Centre will be prioritised into distinct construction phases.

Although initially Born Free Foundation will manage the construction and operations of Centre initially, one of the main project objectives for the future is to hand over the Centre to EWCA in the future. A detailed business plan will predict operating costs and highlight funding needs and mechanisms.
