The Born Free Foundation is concerned and saddened to learn that three chimpanzees fled their enclosure at the Oasis Park in Fuerteventura on Friday, and that two have since been shot dead.

Apparently, attempts were made to tranquilise the two females and one male, but the zoo staff were only successful in darting and recapturing one female. The male and the other female were tragically shot dead by the police. Reports also suggest that a staff member was seriously injured  and required surgery.

This incident follows the escape in May of two chimps from Sa Coma Safari Zoo in Mallorca. In this instance, one chimp was shot dead by police and a second was reportedly found drowned in a water tank.

We are left with very serious questions about the security and protocols in place at Oasis Park and in zoos across Spain. The Born Free Foundation firmly believes that highly complex and intelligent animals such as chimps are particularly ill-suited to life in captivity, and that they pose an extremely significant risk to humans. We call on the relevant authorities to undertake an urgent investigation to ensure that such an unfortunate incident cannot happen again.
