In early January, we were notified by a friend of Limbe Wildlife Centre (L.W.C.) that a young chimpanzee was being used as a human attraction in a Chinese restaurant in the city of Douala. We immediately contacted LAGA and MINFOF, and on 17 January the infant, named Chinoise, was successfully confiscated. Ainare, Pandrillus Project Manager, and Jonathan, Head Keeper, traveled to Douala to bring Chinoise to the safety of L.W.C., where she is now receiving specialized care and will soon be able to live with chimpanzees once again. Prior to her rescue, Chinoise likely witnessed the death of her family for bushmeat, and was then sold illegally as a pet, where she would be left to face a lifetime of abandonment and abuse.

Chinoise, already having canines, is around 13 months old, and is currently being cared for in quarantine. Upon arrival, she suffered from a fever and an infection, and received immediate care. Recently, Chinoise had her first health check, and our veterinary team found that she also has damage to her liver; it is likely that the Chinese restaurant had been serving her alcohol. She continues to be closely monitored and is on medical treatment.

At the Chinese restaurant, Chinoise had been tied with a rope, and it is clear that she was often abandoned. She is a very quiet infant and is comfortable being on her own, rarely crying or making noise. Chinoise’s big personality is beginning to emerge, and she is always sure to tell us what she wants. Once she passes the 90-day quarantine period and her health checks, Chinoise will be introduced to the nursery chimpanzee group at L.W.C. where she will once again have the chance to be a chimpanzee.
