The black tie dinner at the Savoy in London on Friday 27th September proved to be a very memorable evening for all those present, with Sir David Attenborough attending as the special guest of honour.

The evening was well and truly kicked off by Brian May and Kerry Ellis who were introduced by Virginia McKenna. They played a 20 minute set of both poignant and uplifting songs, mostly from their recent Born Free acoustic tour. A series of iconic great ape film clips were then screened, powered by the highly unusual and visual spectacle of 12 pedal-powered cinema bicycles manned by a crew of enthusiastic volunteers.

BBC film producers and TV celebrities including Charlotte Uhlenbroek gave first-hand accounts of what it takes to both film and conserve great apes in the wild, and one of the highlights was definitely a conversation between Ian Redmond and Sir David, followed by a question and answer session between the audience and Sir David covering all manner of topical conservation issues.

Celebrity auctioneer James Lewis, a life-long admirer of Sir David, skilfully and with much humour managed the main auction which raised tens of thousands of pounds for 6 great ape related projects across the world which are supported by the events 5 main partners (Born Free Foundation, Care for the Wild International, Humane Society International UK, International Primate Protection League, Gorilla Organization).

Born Free will support work related to the conservation of Eastern lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as well as illegal wildlife trade law enforcement in the West African countries of Guinea and Togo as an extension of the work that has been established by the award winning Last Great Ape Organization.

We would like to extend a special vote of thanks to everyone who played a role in making this event such a success, and most especially to Sir David who once again demonstrated his remarkable commitment to the great apes and all things natural.
