Born Free is an active member of this global coalition of organisations and individuals, working for the conservation and welfare of apes. It provides a forum for discussion of issues relating to apes, lobbies collectively for enforcement of legislation to improve the welfare and/or conservation of apes, and campaigns for greater public awareness of ape issues and increased respect for apes.

Born Free has launched a new grant, through the Primate Society of Great Britain (PSGB), to support students researching primate conservation in their own countries. The grant is allocated twice a year and is especially targeted to nationals of developing countries, and to projects that fill an identified conservation need.
"Born Free has always focussed on taking direct, positive action," says Head of Conservation, Dr Claudio Sillero, "but without reliable, scientific information conservationists cannot know what action is needed. That is why an investment in practical field research is vital."
