Initiated by the authorities at Kahuzi Biega National Park, this small facility housed at the Lwiro research centre just outside Bukavu in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) cares for rescued ex-pet chimpanzees and other primates that have been surrendered by their owners.
Acknowledging their work in the difficult conditions of poverty and civil insecurity, Born Free began funding the centre in 2003 through specific appeals for chimpanzees held there, helping to fund a medical operation and the construction of a larger enclosure. Through Jane Goodall International-Uganda there is now a regular NGOš presence at the site and further construction and development is underway.
