New Chimp Enclosure at Limbe

We are very pleased to announce that the Born Free Chimpanzee Enclosure built at the Limbe Wildlife Centre in Cameroon was opened on Saturday 7th March. Local politicians, officials, press and public were joined by Ian Redmond, Born Free’s Senior Wildlife Consultant, for the event.

The new enclosure has been several years in its design and construction, and it will have a huge impact on the management of the rescued chimpanzees at the centre.

As well as providing a large and beautifully green space with a pool and climbing apparatus, it will also allow nearly all the chimpanzees to be integrated into one group, thus freeing up previous enclosures for other animals.

Felix Lankester, Manager of the Limbe Wildlife Centre, which cares for primates and other animals rescued from illegal trade and possession in Cameroon, said “It is simply fantastic to see chimpanzees who have spent so long inside, playing in the elephant stalk grass, browsing, climbing and making nests.  Its a sight to behold.”

Our thanks go to all the individuals and organisations that have helped Born Free raise the funds to make this happen, and improve the lives of these animals.
