Born Free Foundation - Keep Wildlife in the Wild

Lilongwe Wildlife Centre’s achievements to date

With the support of local companies and international organisations, the Centre has made an impressive start since its inception in July 2007. Phase I has seen the establishment of a Trust and a board of local and International Trustees; the acceptance of two patrons - HRH The Duke of Gloucester (UK) and Virginia Mckenna (Born Free – UK); the production of a management and business plan; the building of over half of the required animal enclosures; the acceptance of all the animals from the old zoo in Lilongwe ; the training of both animal care and education staff to international standards of practice which has enabled the Trust to open its doors to the general public; the provision of sanctuary space for any wild animal that requires support.

To date, the Centre has taken in over 100 wild animals including a leopard, hyena, baboons, vervet and blue monkeys, a variety of smaller mammals such as genets, bushbabies and a number of injured reptiles and birds. Many of these have already been released back into the wilderness zone, and many more are due for release into the wild soon. In addition, the Centre has facilitated the closure of the city’s zoo – all the animals having now moved to their new spacious enclosures.

Over the next 2-3 years, Phases II and III will involve the completion of the rehabilitation centre, the opening of nature trails within the wilderness zone, the building of additional enclosures to accommodate more rescued animals, and the development of the Centre’s community outreach, life-skills and conservation programmes.
