Protecting the world's 2nd largest fish

Human activity is the main threat to welfare of individual marine animals and conservation of species.  By focussing on key animals and working with local people, Born Free works to protect the ‘savannah of the ocean’.

In Tanzania our support is now ensuring the expansion of the turtle conservation initiative.  We now also protect turtles in Sri Lanka, especially following the devastation of the tsunami.  Wild orca monitoring continues in Canada, while in the UK Born Free sponsors a major basking shark survey to monitor these gentle giants.  Ending captivity remains a priority and we highlight the plight of individuals and oppose capture of wild cetacea.

“The waters around the UK’s western shores are recognised worldwide as one of the best places to see the world’s second largest fish.  This brings us a special responsibility to protect ‘our’ shark.Colin Speedie, UK Basking Shark Project
