Born Free Foundation - Keep Wildlife in the Wild

Update on Misha and Tom

19th September 2011

Following Born Free Foundation’s report in August regarding the medical checks of Misha and Tom, we are pleased to confirm that the two rescued bottlenose dolphins are gradually going from strength to strength.

As was initially thought, it is believed that the dolphins’ problems were caused by an infection that resulted in the dolphins going off their food and therefore not gaining access to fluids, ultimately causing a downward spiral in their condition.  Thankfully the team was able to address the problem before it became more serious and Misha and Tom’s progress has slowly but surely continued to improve.

Though Misha and Tom are on the road to recovery the team will be keeping a particularly keen eye on them, working slowly and calmly for the next 2-3 weeks to ensure this positive progress continues.  Alison Hood, Programmes Director, who has just returned from Turkey, explains that “this has been an unfortunate setback for Misha and Tom and will delay their release but we remain optimistic.  Release timings must be dictated by the readiness of Misha and Tom and with the obvious determination and dedication of the ‘Back to the Blue’ team on the ground, we continue to work hard to give them the very best opportunity to be successfully returned to the wild.”

Once Misha and Tom have returned to full health, rehabilitation will continue in earnest.

Born Free will be revising its ‘Back to the Blue’ website section in coming weeks so please do keep checking back for further information and latest news on Misha and Tom.
