Born Free cautiously welcomes a further development in the debate around elephant trophy imports into the United States.

On 19th November, President Trump was reported to have described elephant hunting as a “horror show” and hinted  that a ban on elephant trophy imports would be enforced.

This development emerged following international condemnation of the announcement just days before that a ban on the importation to the United States of elephant trophies from Zambia and Zimbabwe was about to be lifted, raising fears that wealthy American trophy hunters would flock to these countries intent on slaughtering elephants.

While welcoming Mr Trumps most recent announcement, the proof, as they say will be in the pudding, and Born Free is urging the US Administration to act decisively and implement a complete ban on the importation of elephant trophies from any source without delay.

Born Free also continues to seek an urgent review of trophy imports from all species into both the US and EU, the two largest markets for wildlife trophies.
