The MEEM project monitors Mount Elgon’s elephant population to help prevent poaching, learning about their behaviour and habituate the elephants for tourist viewing.
Mt Elgon National Park is in SW Kenya, on the Uganda border. The elephants are famous for going underground in local caves to find salt, as seen on the BBC’s Life Of Mammals. The MEEM Team is made up of Kenya Wildlife Service personnel, and is funded by Born Free. They track the elephants on a daily basis, take GIS records of sightings, note unusual events or illegal activity, and attempt to habituate the animals by alerting them to their presence with rumble vocalisations.
