School water supply system

The students at Rathambalagama used to drink water from a roadside tube well during the school hours. The staff and the parents all realised that the rust-tainted water was not healthy at all for the kids.

Under the Global Friends programme, Born Free helped the school with a clean water supply system in 2008. The funds were utilised to reconstruct the then dried school well by deepening it with controlled detonations to reach the clean water table.

A pump was installed and a water tower constructed, whilst a complete system of pipes and taps was also laid around the school. The kids now have access to clean water year round, which is being made use of not only for drinking, but for sanitary and agricultural needs too.
